5 Awesome Shows Like Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is definitely one the best shows on television right now! A lot of people have fallen in love with its brand of wacky dark humor, science fiction elements, and unexpected moments of sensitivity. Highlighting the relationship of two social misfits in a world where anything is possible and endless possibilities can happen, the show is very sneaky about its social commentary and satirical qualities. In an industry oversaturated with ‘noble’ messages, something not so in-your-face about its good intentions is pretty refreshing. Its two leads, in the super intelligent but emotionally damaged Rick and his dull yet endearing grandkid Morty, share an unadulterated bond that really sets the tone for the show’s emotional potential, ultimately worming its way into the heart of the show’s millions of viewers.

With its third season currently showing, people can barely wait a week for each episode. So to help lessen your anxiety in-between episodes, here’s 5 shows like Rick and Morty that you can watch to help you pass the time and make waiting a little bit more bearable.

  1. Futurama

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

“Hatched from Matt Groening’s brain, Futurama follows pizza guy Philip J. Fry, who reawakens in 31st century New New York after a cryonics lab accident. Now part of the Planet Express delivery crew, Fry travels to the farthest reaches of the universe with his robot buddy Bender and cyclopsian love interest Leela, discovering freaky mutants, intergalactic conspiracies and other strange stuff.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT

If you’re familiar with the show, then you saw this coming miles away. Both share the same futuristic sci-fi premise and the zany humor. Both are animated shows targeted towards adults, and both are episodic wreck balls. But while Rick and Morty really delve and go deep into the sci-fi, Futurama is a workplace sitcom using a scifi setting. It just scratches the surface.

However its odd assortment of characters make for a really good time though. It’s less dark, more grimy. It’s an ensemble show that relies on the different pairings and interactions of its multiple characters. Unlike Rick and Morty who are the central players every time and somewhat rely on a certain progression, like an offbeat timeline, if you can still consider it one. For Futurama, time is irrelevant. It’s more piece of the present, less whole. Sometimes the whole thing seems a bit disjointed, mainly kept together by an idea, but it still works. It is off the wall, but hey isn’t that sort of similar to what Rick and Morty is all about?

  1. Community

Shows like Rick and Morty

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

“’Community’ is a smart, exuberant comedy that was consistently ranked as one of the most inventive and original half hours on television. This ensemble comedy centers on a tight-knit group of friends who all met at what is possibly the world’s worst educational institution – Greendale Community College.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT

You’re probably thinking, another sitcom, and not an animated one? That’s valid. However know this. Series co-creator and show runner Dan Harmon, was also the brains behind this cult tv-show.

While it focuses on the interactions of 5 extremely different people inside a community college, the show uses a lot of sci-fi elements. As can be expected from Dan Harmon, it plays on a very intelligent field, channeling a lot of different pop culture attributes while breaking a lot of stereotypes about race, gender, and social groups. From episodes focused on Time Travel, to episodes where the entire school turns in a paintball apocalypse, or even recognizing parallel universes exist and playing with the concept of ‘the darkest timeline,’ Community is certainly on par with Rick and Morty in terms of fun and intelligence. Just don’t expect it to be dark, and keep the sci-fi expectations realistic for a sitcom. With stars like Allison Brie and Childish Gambino, who can say no?

  1. BoJack Horseman

Shows like Rick and Morty

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

“Set in a world where Petting Zoo People coexist with humans, the titular BoJack Horseman previously starred in a popular Sitcom, Horsin’ Around, in The ’90s. Now a washed-up actor, BoJack lives in his luxurious Hollywoo home with his deadbeat roommate, Todd, drowning his empty former D-List celebrity life and other problems in a cocktail of drugs and booze. Clashing with his agent and on-again-off-again girlfriend, Princess Carolyn, BoJack is pushed to finish his memoirs to help him find any acting work.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT

In a fantasy world where human and anthropomorphic animals coexist together, a former celebrity horseman plans on having a comeback to Hollywoo (yep without the ‘D.’) It’s basically a satire of the entertainment industry that channels a lot of dark humor and exaggerations. While it did start off a bit shakey, Bojack is certainly one of the most clever shows on television. And though it doesn’t share a lot of similar traits to Rick and Morty, it’s intelligent brand of comedy is still something that viewers of the show can learn to appreciate.

  1. Gintama

Shows like Rick and Morty

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

“The Amanto, aliens from outer space, have invaded Earth and taken over feudal Japan. As a result, a prohibition on swords has been established, and the samurai of Japan are treated with disregard as a consequence. However one man, Gintoki Sakata, still possesses the heart of the samurai, although from his love of sweets and work as a yorozuya, one might not expect it. Accompanying him in his jack-of-all-trades line of work are Shinpachi Shimura, a boy with glasses and a strong heart, Kagura with her umbrella and seemingly bottomless stomach, as well as Sadaharu, their oversized pet dog. Of course, these odd jobs are not always simple, as they frequently have run-ins with the police, ragtag rebels, and assassins, oftentimes leading to humorous but unfortunate consequences.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT

Gintama is episodic animated series or ‘anime’ from Japan about an eccentric samurai who lives in a version of the country’s Edo-period invaded by Aliens. Yup, it’s a very interesting premise that combines the classic feel of action anime, with touches of sci-fi fantasy, and the oddly smart gag sensibilities of the Japanese. It’s probably the most out rightly hilarious show in this list. It also references and parodies lot of the bigger and famous anime that you might be surprised to recognize.

While it’s more fantasy and less science fiction, its elements of dark humor and its ability to break the fourth wall is something it shares with Rick and Morty. Plus its mix of wacky escapades and surprisingly sobering moments of intelligence makes it something that a lot of Rick and Morty fans can love!

Still, he persists in trying to steal her away, and Finn and Jake, along with Lady Raincorn (a cross between a unicorn and a rainbow) do their best to keep her from harm.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT

While Rick and Morty is a show for adults, Adventure Time is something more for kids but is still something adults can still appreciate with its witty dialogue full of one-liners and puns. In terms of atmosphere it’s probably the most similar to Rick and Morty among the list. The story is set in post apocalyptic Land of Ooo, some version of earth after it was almost destroyed by nuclear holocaust. It’s humor, despite being more PG, is also quite similar to Rick and Morty in terms not being afraid to tackle dark and somber themes. Considering everything, it you love Rick and Morty, then you’ll probably like Adventure Time.
